DECA demonstrated their college and career-technical skills by participating in DECA’s industry-validated Competitive Events Program, aligned with Career Clusters, National Curriculum Standards and 21st Century Skills in the areas of marketing, finance, hospitality, management and other business fields. The DECA members who moved onto this competition had competed previously at the district and state/association level, guaranteeing that the competitors at ICDC were truly the best of the best.
Before the competition, students had to undergo heavy preparation from numerous practice tests and vocabulary to solidifying their written reports and presentations. Training sessions, organized by the students themselves, ensured that each member felt confident going into competition. Making it to the grand stage is no easy task, but with the help of their peers, mentors, and advisor, this group of ICDC competitors were ready to take on any challenge presented.
The competition includes a combination of an exam, project, presentation and/or case study. To qualify for this level itself is quite an honor, but Foothill DECA went above and beyond having 6 of their 18 competitors continue onto the final round of competition, placing them top 20 internationally overall in their respective events.
The following students moved onto the finals and/or placed overall:
- Benjamin Chen, Praveen Ravisankar, and Valentina Im - 2nd place - International Business Plan
- David Xu - Top 10 - Human Resources Management
- Mihir Weling - Top 10 - Quick Serve Restaurant Management
- Ananth Kumar - Top 20 - Business Services Marketing
In addition, a couple students placed in individual elements of the competition:
- Cindy Zhao and Niva Ranavat - Roleplay Finalist - Financial Services Team Decision Making
Foothill DECA was also accompanied to ICDC in Atlanta by our Foothill High School Vice Principal, Josh Butterfield; Foothill DECA Chapter Advisor, Tami Raaker; Foothill DECA Chaperone, Tadeh Sarkis
Foothill DECA Co-President, Praveen Ravisankar, described ICDC as “an experience I’ll never forget.” Also winning at ICDC, Praveen said “winning 2nd place at ICDC was a dream come true.” Praveen has been a DECA member for all of high school and he said “DECA has literally helped me change my life. It took an awkward kid and made me into the extrovert that I am. My public speaking skills improved tremendously. My connections grew and I made some of my very best friends in DECA. If I had the opportunity, I would go back to freshman year and do it all over again.”
DECA is a career technical student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.
