Best Buddies Chapter Honored

Foothill students involved with Best Buddies were honored for their hard work and dedication by being named an Outstanding Chapter at Best Buddies International's 19th annual Student Leadership Conference held in July.

Foothill was chosen as one of 19 outstanding chapters from more than 900 high school programs throughout the world. Students are recognized for their dedication to enhancing the lived of people with intellectual disabilities.

The mission of Best Buddies is to enhance the lives of people with mental disabilities by providing chances for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment. The nonprofit group was founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, of the same family that started Special Olympics. The program started at one school and has grown to have an international reach at middle schools, high schools, college, citizens, e-Buddies and jobs.

The annual leadership conference prepares student leaders to run an effective Best Buddies chapter at their school. Students learn to recruit new members, plan group activities and promote the social integration of people with intellectual challenges.

Nearly 1,400 students from across the country and around the world attended the conference at Indiana University. Their theme was "Champions for Friendship."

“Best Buddies International applauds the efforts of our exceptional high school and college chapters, which have pooled the talents of their participants to build and strengthen the Best Buddies mission at their school,” said David Quilleon, Best Buddies' vice president of programs. “Each chapter’s creativity, dedication and hard work play an important role in furthering the social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities within their communities and around the world.”
Congratulations to all the Foothill students who have worked so hard to make our
