The competitive We the People team has done so well at the regional competition that the group will advance to the state level in February.
The 23-member team won Californi'a Region II competition at San Francisco City Hall on Friday, Dec. 5. The regional victory allows the team to advance to the state contest in Sacramento after the first of the year.
The goal of We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution is to promote civic competence and responsibility among students. The instructional aspect enhances students' understanding of the institutions of American constitutioanal democracy. Students learn the modern relevance of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Competitions are simulated congressional hearings in which students "testify" before a panel of judges. Students demonstrate their grasp of constitutional principles and evaluate, take and defend positions on relevant historical and modern issues.
