Model UN

Foothill's burgeoning Model UN team won top honors at the Contra Costa County Model United Nations competition held Halloween weekend at Diablo Valley College.

Foothill bested its fiercest rivals, California and Dougherty Valley high schools in San Ramon, to capture the best overall delegation award. Foothill's team also won 25 individual awards, nearly half of all awards available to conference participants.

Foothill's Model UN team has had phenomenal success since being founded in 2013. Last year, the team ranked in the top 150 delegations in all of North America and in the top 25 in the Western U.S.

"In just two short years, we've easily become one of the best in the (Bay Area)," team president Bryce Fan said. "In my three years of doing (Model UN), no moment has ever come close to the amount of pride and joy I felt when we were called for best delegation."

"Hearing our named called for best delegation was incredible," team member Shivan Vipani added. "It was the culmination of hours of hard work."

Juniors Anushka Sikdar, Shivan Vipani, Amy Zhou, Raymond Peng and senior Bryce Fan won top honors in their respective committees by bringing home a gavel and the best delegate award. Juniors Gianna Barletta, Abhishek Bhatt, Tony Choung, Bernie Nguyen and sophomores Donghyun Jeong, Julian Meyer and Arman Abrashamchian  won second-place awards in their committees. Thirteen other students placed third or won verbal commendations.

Students debated in a myriad of committees, ranging from the UN Security Council, Office of Drugs and Crime, Women and Disarmament & International Security.

"It's really fantastic to see how interest in the club is growing," Gianna Barletta, vice president of conference preparation, said. "Last year, we (had) only 30 delegates, but this year, we (had more than) 50."

World history teacher Michael Leitz and AP human geography teacher Nathan Parrish are the team's advisers.

The Model UN team travels across the state for multiple conferences during the year. In addition to the Contra Costa County Model UN conference, the team attends conferences at UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Stanford and California High School for East Bay Model United Nations, a conference Foothill co-hosts with Cal High. Anyone interested in Model UN is encouraged to attend meetings every Monday during lunch in C-6.
