Speech & Debate

Foothill's speech and debate students had tremendous success at two recent tournaments.

Bryce Fan and Arthur Hwang won the final round of the public forum division at the Santa Clara University Philalethic Invitational in mid-April. Their record was five wins and zero losses in the preliminary rounds. They won unanimous approval from the judges in subsequent elimination rounds to win the first-place title.

The teams of Jaykumar Kesavan and Richard Lee as well as Jeffrey Huai and Jason Zhang were among two of the 48 teams that competed at a qualifying tournament held in mid-March at James Logan High School in Union City. Jeffrey and Jason reached the top seven to qualify for state. More than 250 teams attended qualifiers throughout the state.

Jeffrey and Jason advanced to the California Speech and Debate Tournament in late April at James Enochs High School in Modesto. The duo competed in the public forum debate and took sixth place out of nearly 50 teams competing. They had four wins and two losses, an impressive record given the stiff competition from established debate teams.

Congratulations to all speech and debate team members for another successful year.
