A two-person team from Foothill's larger debate team beat the defending champions to take the top title at a recent debate tournament.

The Foothill FH Team, with members Bryce Fan and Arthur Hwang, took top honors in the final championshiop debate. They defeated the team from the private Harker School in San Jose, ranked 10th nationally last year. The Foothill team also beat students from Milpitas High School in the final round.

The debate team entered three two-person teams at the Presentation High School Public Forum Invitational Debate Tournament held Nov. 16-17 at Presentation High School in San Jose. The event featured 34 two-person teams from the Bay Area competing in the varsity division.

The Foothill HZ Team, with Jeffrey Huai and Jason Zhang, had a 5-1 record in the preliminary rounds,  took third place in the elimination rounds and advanced to the quarter finals.

Students were also judged on their speaking skills with Bryce Fan taking third place, Jeffrey Huai in seventh place and Arthur Hwang in 10th place out of 68 participants.

Juniors Tony Hong and Tony Wang also took part in the tournament.

More debate team members took part in the Santa Clara University Dempsey-Cronin Memorial Invitational Speech & Debate Tournament on Nov. 23-24. There were 63 teams and 126 students in the varsity division.

Foothill students who participated are juniors Jeffrey Huai, Jason Zhang, Anthony Hong, Sabrina Nguyen and Nathan Zhang and sophomores Arthur Hwang and Bryce Fan.

In the debate round, the Foothill FH Team, with members Bryce Fan and Arthur Hwang, had a 4-1 record in the preliminary rounds, took seventh place in the elimination rounds and advanced to the quarter finals.

Foothill students who won speaker awards are Sabrina Nguyen in 12th place, Arthur Hwang in 13th place and Nathan Zhang in 15th place out of 126 students.

Congratulations to all the debate students who represented Foothill so well at the recent competitions.

The Foothill debate club provides students opportunities to learn various styles of debate and participate in tournaments. The club meets in Mrs. Fulton’s room D-16 every other Friday during lunch.
