Cheer Season Starts Strong

Foothill’s competition cheer teams had a strong showing in the first of three Southern California USA Regional competitions they will attend this year and again qualified for USA Nationals this past Saturday at the USA Regional competition held at Santa Margarita High School in Rancho Santa Margarita.

Foothill’s junior varsity squad won first place in the junior varsity show cheer novice division, competing against eight other junior varsity novice teams from Southern California. The varsity squad won third place in the varsity show cheer intermediate division. Varsity competed in a mixed category of six small and intermediate-sized teams and scored as the top small team in the division. (Varsity competes as a small team at nationals.) Foothill's group stunt teams did not compete this round.

“Both teams did remarkably well given injuries and substitutions they faced in the past month,” Coach Kim DeJoy said at the end of the day.

This competition was the second in a series of six competitions in which Foothill's teams will compete from November to March on their quest for back-to-back national titles when they return to USA Nationals in March. The teams will return to Southern California twice in January to compete in three more USA Regionals. You can support them on their journey by following them at www.facebook.com/FHSFalconCheer.

Varsity show cheer team includes Amanda Arnold, Zoe Cristobal, Sarina DeJoy, Bailey Downum, Michelle French, Camille Hamlin, Keri Kodama (captain), Amber Marquez, Emily Palange, Jordan Robinson, Gabriella Scalise and Natalie Wright.

Junior varsity show cheer team includes Cassidee Banks, Kailyn Coleman, Mackenzie Curran, Mitsu Dill, Shauna Dunlap, Jenna Edsen, Karina Galvez, Morgan Greenup, Emma Loll, Maddy Maas, Sara Moore, Brie Morrissey, Erin Page, Jordan Robinson (co-captain), Taylor Sanchez (co-captain), Anika Simons, Sabrina Stermer and Noelle Viscaina.

The road to USA Nationals is 10 months long and takes an extremely high level of commitment from the cheerleaders and families. Foothill sports must fund 100 percent of their program costs, so Foothill competition cheer is exceptionally grateful for the support of the many sponsors that are helping to defray expenses and get the teams to USA Nationals.
